Fear and Hunger in Japan: On Anthony Bourdain’s Last Graphic Novel
By Michael Dooley Although Anthony Bourdain died before the release of Hungry Ghosts, he did review and approve the design of the last of his three graphic novels. Once an aspiring comics artist, Bourdain also had a passion for the medium in its myriad forms. He loved and collected adventure newspaper strips Milton Caniff’s Terry and the Pirates and Will Eisner’s The Sp

Navajoland, USA: First Hundred Years 1868-1968
The Night Library* periodically examines titles in our assembled collections, extracting information from the physical attributes of the book itself. This week we consider a 1968 title entitled Navajoland, USA, 1868-1968, edited by Perry Allen, designed by L. Max Connolly and published in Window Rock, Arizona, by the Navajo Tribe. The cover carries a screen-printed version of a Navajo sand painting. Meant to be ceremonially scattered soon after its likeness is introduced to t

Voodoo, Guns & Whiskey at the AIGA National Conference
Everyone on stage at the AIGA National Conference started swigging and sharing Southern Comfort, and the two thousand designers in the audience went wild with joyous laughter. First were the five young contestants. The bottle was then handed to host Sean Adams, and then to the judges: Gail Anderson, Aaron Draplin, Robynne Raye, and Marc English in the guest seat, who took the longest, heartiest guzzle. After all, it was celebration time back in New Orleans. And it was part of

Where We Are and Where We’re Going: Type Trends as an Expression of Culture by Stephen Coles Any attempt to summarize typographic trends is doomed to fail—or at least fall short. Culture+Typography: Ghost Signs
It all started with a cultural box exchange between the Honolulu AIGA and the South Carolina AIGA chapters. Each group packed up items that reflected its respective state along with typographic designs for clients and shipped them to one another. When Nikki Villagomez opened up the Hawaii box with her fellow South Carolina AIGA members, she “was blown away by how much their culture affects their design, and it forced me to look at design in a completely different way.” Seeing

Collage Artist Justin Lieberman Cuts to the Chase
For designers who find imaginative, experimental publications sexy, Printed Matter’s second L.A. Art Book Fair was an orgy of visual delights. Andy Warhol's Attraction to Herbert Bayer's Lips
When Alexey Brodovitch was art directing Harper’s Bazaar, he ran a striking cover by Herbert Bayer for its 1940 “College Fashions” issue. A three-quarter view photo of a woman’s face is duplicated in two rows of four: a clear newsstand eye-catcher. In his formative years as a commercial artist, Warhol would regularly produce drawings by tracing photos. Although the article doesn’t mention Bazaar, it does remark that the sketch “reflects his obsession with repetition.” And now
