Designism- design for social change

It’s that time of year again. The now annual Designism (“4.0,” for its fourth year) will convene tomorrow, Wednesday, November 18, at the ADC Gallery, from 6:30-9:00 p.m. This year’s big questions are: Can you change the world and make money? Should you make money while changing the world? And how can we use design thinking to change the world and still run a business?

Conflating social activism and business solvency may produce some interesting responses and heated debates, but this year’s participants promise to stir the pot and shake the leg. They are Blake Mycoskie, Chief Shoe Giver, TOMS Shoes; Bill Drenttel, partner, Winterhouse Studio and Design Observer; Paula Scher, partner, Pentagram; and Mark Randall, principal, Worldstudio. (Randall is also currently planning a summer workshop on design activism in the urban environment at The School of Visual Arts.)

Designism was created by Brian Collins, Chairman and Chief Creative Officer at Collins:. Laura Des Enfants, the ADC coordinator, explains it this way: “Digging deeply into business models that support the greater good–while providing jobs and income–opens the door for a conversation.” Helen Walters, Editor of Innovation and Design at BusinessWeek, will moderate the panel as they examine social change and business prerequisites.
