Sticker madness did not rise out of the counter culture’s primordial ooze from nothing. Foil-stamped, embossed labels were and still are big business. If it is not clear to what I’m referring, think anniversary foil stamped seals on boxes or envelopes. They more or less all look the same. But actually, there is a huge variety of foil designs in the world.

And as one printer promotes his offerings: “Affordable and attractive, our gold foil seals will get your business noticed!” These days, however, the design of foil labels and seals has devolved into standard templates. But in the 40s and 50s, the golden age of metallic foil design, the imagination ran wild. Here are some examples.
