The Daily Heller: Fantasie und Symbolik
Founded 1919, in the wake of the horror known as The Great War, Der Orchideengarten (The Orchid Garden) is considered to be the first fantasy magazine. A 2017 Kickstarter introduced the magazine to a niche American audience in an eponymous book by Thomas Negovan, proprietor of the visionary Century Guild Museum of Art in Los Angeles. The genre has also been written about by others, which is why I am floored not to have known about it before (thanks for opening my eyes, Henri

The Modern Monogram: A Historic Survey of Ciphers, Marks and Monograms
Centuries of Monograms In my business, Nancy Sharon Collins, Stationer LLC, I create monograms and ciphers for clients and spend a good deal of time looking for historic inspiration. This article shares some of my research. It is likely that modern monograms originated with the beginning of type, about 1450. This is when printers, print collectors and artists began creating marks identifying that their work, or collection, was distinct from everyone else’s. Figure 1 – Illustr

Brad Holland’s Letters to Self
Register today for the free course “5 Skills Every Design Needs to Know.” You may not realize it, but my theme for a few of this year’s (in fact, this past month’s) Daily Hellers is fifty years. Here is the one on underground type, and this one is about Rolling Stone. Today is another. Fifty years ago this month I met Brad Holland for the first time. I’ve written about him before, and will doubtless write about him again, like today. The following is a conversation about his

The Origins of Social Stationery Lettering
Figure 1 – Hand engraved lettering styles—these are not fonts—offered by Nancy Sharon Collins, Stationer LLC Through the advent of desktop publishing in the 1980s, social stationery was a ubiquitous part of every day life. Printed calling cards, business cards, letterhead, correspondence cards, note and thank you cards, invitations, announcements and other stationery items were mass-produced and used as quickly and expendably as Tweets and text messages are today. Now, we lov

Jessica Hische: Letterer, Illustrator and “Procrastiworker”
Jessica Hische grew up in Pennsylvania, “raised by two non-creatives that decided it would be OK to let their little girl pursue a seemingly impractical career.” Seemingly being the key word there. After declaring graphic design as her major, Hische graduated in 2006 and joined HEADCASE Design in Philadelphia where she spent time designing books. Soon after, she began working for Louise Fili out of Brooklyn. And by 2009, she was on her own as a letterer, type designer, illust

A Wonderland of Rock Poster Lettering and Typography
The deadline for PRINT’s Typography & Lettering Awards has been extended to Dec. 2! Enter today. Mitch Putnam notes in the intro to his new book, OMG Posters, rock posters are a completely unique art form—“they’re drawn, printed (many by hand), hung, and sold to commemorate a one-night event in a single city. It’s hard to get more niche than that. The editions are usually mind-bogglingly low, often one hundred copies or fewer, never to be reprinted.” Which is part of why Putn

Mary Kate McDevitt Talks Handlettering
Typography & Lettering Inspiration from Mary Kate McDevitt “It just has to feel right. If I look at a piece and something’s a bit off, it throws me. That could mean an unbalanced composition, kinks in the swashes or flourishes, or wonkiness in the letters when the style calls for something more technically proficient. Not to say I don’t love some weird and wonky lettering (because I do), but it still needs to feel harmonious.” Mary Kate McDevitt has been working as a freelanc

Letters From Svenska
Pyttans AB and CD to Learn is a strangely delightful ABC book dedicated to the Swedish opera singer Marianne Morner, also known as Pyttan. Painted in 1896 by “uncle” Albert Engström, it has become one of the classic works of Swedish literature. But being that my Swedish is next to ingenting, I publish it here to look at the quirkiness of the letters, the wrong strokes and the imagery, which may give you a hint at the word(s). Be aware some of these images represent the ethni
