Brand of the Day: Hummer and Its Quiet Revolution
Hummer, that giant, gas-guzzling road monster of yore, is coming back—but the vehicle’s next generation is set to hum along a bit more quietly than the last. In late January, General Motors announced that Hummer, which they had discontinued in 2010, was going back into production as an electric vehicle. (Yes, “electric Hummer” seems a bit like an oxymoron—but we’ll take anything over the old model.) As the brand sets its sights to the future, they’re doing the same with the v

Nathan’s Famous 100-Year-Old Logo
Over 100 years ago in 1916, a Polish immigrant named Nathan Handwerker opened a hot dog stand on the corner of Surf and Sitwell Avenues on Coney Island, New York. With the help of two friends, their $300 loan and his wife’s secret spice recipe, Handwerker created the original Nathan’s Famous hot dog stand. Legend has it, on the 4th of July in 1916 two immigrants settled an argument over who was the most patriotic by having a hot dog-eating contest. The now-famous contest beca

Best Deadpool Comics Artists: A Designer’s Guide
The Deadpool reviews are in. Thumbs up for the meta-commentary mixed with lowbrow humor, not-so-up for substantive plot and narrative. But what about the top concern among graphic designers, i.e.: how smart does it look? Well, in a word: Eh. And not surprisingly, considering the film’s Beavis and Butthead-y teaser ads like that billboard which may be the most juvenile takeoff ever on Paul Rand’s Eye-Bee-M. Although Blur Studio visual effects pro Tim Miller does shine with his

8 Ingenious Food Truck Designs
At Print, we appreciate all design in varying shapes, sizes and media. While browsing through a myriad of vibrant designs from the Regional Design Annual and beyond, we sought to showcase a less common area of graphic design—the visual identity and package design for food trucks. What originally lured customers to walking up to each of these food trucks for a tasty taco or wood-fired pizza was the well-executed, thoughtful design (and, okay, probably hunger too). Food truck c

08/18/2014: Brand Beir logo
Logo updates occasionally approach the random and arbitrary, so it’s nice to an updated logo that hints at its past, but makes all the right upgrades. This is the case in VBAT’s redesign of the Brand Beir logo. The firm keeps the striking, blackletter typeface of the name and nearly discards the rest, resulting in a clean, streamlined logo that stands alone quite well. Take a deeper look at the transition here. Via Brand New. #Amsterdam #brand #green #beer #logo #identity

Handle With Care
In this blog series, Sagi Haviv discusses principles of identity design as they manifest in trademarks created by his firm, Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv. A key parameter for an identity design assignment may be to stay close to the existing image. This requirement can be due to significant audience recognition for the current trademark, or great affection for the traditional identity within the company or organization. In these cases, continuity with the legacy identity and a
