I can’t say I think of Planters’ Mr. Peanut as a source of historical data, but this colorful little “Paint Book” from 1935 would seem to indicate otherwise. “Story And Paint Book — Some Of America’s Famous Men” is evidently a follow-up series to a similar publication they offered depicting all the Presidents Of The United States from Washington to F.D.R. You’ll see an explanation in red type at the bottom of the middle spread answering any questions as to why none of the U.S. Presidents are included as “Famous Men.” In their words, “We, therefore, ommitted (sp?) the Presidents to avoid any duplication.” Safe to say we shouldn’t depend on Planters as a source of grammatical data. On top of this error, they saw fit to duplicate four of the personalities (Benjamin Franklin, William Penn, Henry Ford, and Admiral Peary) in the publication. I chose to ommmittt them while editing the scans. . . We DO learn from this premium that the company’s original name was “Planters Nut & Chocolate Co.”

The booklet is 10.5″ X 7.5″ and 32 pages long, and I can find no credit for the illustrations. Perhaps Mr. Peanut did them all himself ? How “Walt Disney” of him !
