What is it that makes the human skeleton such an object of fascination and joy. Its clear what human remains mean to archeologists, biologists and forensic scientists. Yes, even dogs have a bone fixation. Dem Bones. But bones are bones. And in the case of human bones, they’re not just eerie but naturally creepy. They are evidence of our immortality. Memento mori are artistic or symbolic reminders that we are all going to die (or have died already). In the European Christian art memento mori emphasized the concept of Heaven, Hell, and, yes, salvation of the soul in the afterlife.
