Bolinas, California —
A haven for a spirited community of surfers, artists, and musicians located 30 miles north of San Francisco. A concrete ramp with graffiti-covered sides leads you down to the beach, and those in the know will recognize the art of Mike Shine on these walls.

Bolinas is the home of Shine’s infamous surf/art shack — a cabin-like home filled with what he calls his ‘creepy driftwood art’ inspired by Norse mythology, surf/skate imagery, and 1970s pop culture. It’s like a clubhouse built to inspire creativity, surfing, listening to old 8-tracks, and hanging with friends over cold beers. Shine’s shack has currently been recreated at the Laguna Art Museum’s group exhibition Art Shack, where you can stroll through 30 different shacks by artists such as Don Ed Hardy, Shag, George Herms, Paul Frank, Marion Peck, and Mark Ryden, among others.
