Based on the Hemingway novel of the same name, this paint-on-glass animation by Aleksandr Petrov took over two years to create. The result earned Mr. Petrov many awards, including the 1999 Academy Award for Animated Short. Click on the image above to view (yeah, you gotta navigate through some commercials but it’s worth it).

Mr. Petrov used his fingertips and paintbrushes to paint slow-drying oils on different layers of glass positioned at different levels. After photographing each frame, he modified the painting… 29,000 frames later, he delivered this 20 minute sublime masterpiece.

I recommend viewing this in the largest format possible. Originally, this film was shot in IMAX.
