Throughout the history of environmental signage, advertisements have been front and center in almost every industrialized society. And for obvious reasons. I’ve collected a few proposals dating back to the early twentieth century by Jean Carlu, Alvar Alto and Herbert Bayer. The idea was these structures not only promoted products and services, they brightened up the dark surround. What greater sign of social and economic health than brightly lit advertising signs.
