Covering the Beatles

One thing to do in a Wi-Fi zone in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy (if you’re bored) is Google virtually anything on your mind. It is a mindless way to wile away the hours of no electricity, no heat, no e-mail, no hot food, and no hot baths. In Manhattan, I sat on the sidewalk outside the W Union Square hotel, whose Wi-Fi spilled out from its concrete and glass walls, and I found this: covers (not album covers) of Beatles songs recorded on 45s.

Not a bad find, either. I never realized that Homer & Jethro or David Cassidy (of the Partridge Family) did their own versions of “She Loves You” and “Please Please Me,” respectively. And there are more surprises, nicely annotated by the Internet Beatles Album webmaster.
