Michael Russem, proprietor of the Offices of the Kat Ran Press, publisher of and curator of the Katherine Small Gallery in Somerville, Mass., has created an exhibition titled “Dick Bruna and Black Bears and Japanese Matchboxes.” He asks the question: “While Dick Bruna was writing and illustrating his early books for children, he was also designing book covers for mysteries and detective novels. On the other side of the world, Japanese artists and designers were designing matchbox labels. What do Dick Bruna’s covers have to do with Japanese matchboxes? ” For the answer you’ll have to order his gem of a catalog and/or see the exhibit on view until March 8.
