Elbert Hubbard, founder of the Roycrofters, America’s Arts + Crafts community in Aurora, New York, was perhaps the first designer as author, and he was certainly an early design entrepreneur.
In 1894 his impressive series of Little Journeys to the Homes of the Great started coming out once a month for 14 straight years. 180 were produced, usually with title pages worthy of William Morris. The books were printed and bound at the Roycrofters Shop and offer a glimpse into the pioneering entrepreneurship that shows the extent of Hubbard’s vivsion.
