Fascism’s Colorful Disease

People of a certain generation recalling the bad old days of Italian Fascism and Benito Mussolini will say by way of apology, “At least he made the trains run on time.” I’m not actually certain that the Italian version of our own Donald Duce Trump actually has made the trains or anything run better, but it sounds as true as “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” or “carrots are good for the eyes.”

Still, despite the acknowledged horrors of the Fascist regime, they did attempt to do some civil service for the Italian population. And one thing that was high on the agenda was health and disease prevention. Among the most aggressive campaigns mounted by the regime was the initiative to eradicate tuberculosis. Italy was not alone. Most countries in the world had active programs to fight this killer disease.

These colorful seals or stamps are very much like American Christmas Seals, but there is a spirited quality that belies the fact that the fasci image on the stamp represents an iron-fisted government that would just as soon stamp out resistance to its rule as TB itself.
