When Gabe Fowler, editor and publisher of the comic tabloid Smoke Signal, devised the idea of handing out a free special issue by the tens of thousands from the back of a van during the Women’s March in Washington D.C. this January, he immediately realized, “I would prefer that this issue have a strong and powerful roar of female voices without meddling by men,” notes the press release for RESIST!
New Yorker art editor Françoise Mouly was called upon for her contacts and expertise. “Oy! I’m so overwhelmed with work and projects as it is,” she told him. “But this is exactly the kind of project I’d drop other things for!” Mouly mentioned it to her daughter, writer Nadja Spiegelman, who immediately signed on and drew up a list of their favorite artists, and also put together a website in order to place an open call for submissions.

On the morning of Nov. 23, they shared the link. Within hours, the post had gone viral. Dozens of images began flowing in. They had clearly hit a nerve.
Mouly and Spiegelman will edit the subsequent printed anthology of work submitted to the site, and 30,000 copies will be distributed for free at the Women’s March on Jan. 21 in Washington D.C. and throughout the United States. Delighted with the quality and quantity of the response, they are posting their favorite images a few times a day and the site has quickly become a lightning rod for artists who want to RESIST!
