Alberto Díaz Gutiérrez, better known as Alberto Korda (above) or simply Korda (September 14, 1928, in Havana, Cuba–May 25, 2001, in Paris, France) was a photographer who chronicled the early years of the Cuban revolution; but he’s best known for his heroic image of Che Guevara. After the revolution, Korda was Castro’s personal photographer. In Cuba By Korda, published in a Spanish edition in 2006 but available through Amazon, many other of the iconic images he shot are shown in glorious black and white. On one contact sheet are various outtakes of the famous Che image. What surprised me was that Che is wearing a leather motorcycle jacket with black stripes down either side–very classy (below).
