There was a time – and maybe there still is – when retailers did their utmost to focus consumer attention on their prices in graphically exciting ways. Price signs were set in lovely typefaces or were elegantly hand lettered, then printed on handsome paper, cardboard and other surfaces. Some were etched on metal others, like those above from the 1930s, were printed on glass with mirrored surfaces to reflect the light and add an insouciant glow.
