Dark Peculiar Toys is an assembly of eerie visions in print form by Viktor Koen, which will be shown for the first time in New York City at the United Photo Industries Gallery October 4–28, after a long worldwide run of exhibitions. Dark Peculiar Toys raises questions of what a toy is and is supposed to do, and where it collides with conventional thinking. Koen writes in a statement that his prints deface, break, or deconstruct toys “into piles of raw materials, waiting to be re-constructed in alternative ways, without instructions or the memory of their origins and function.” He continues, “They only retain colors, shapes and the scars inflicted by their previous owners. Scars that separate them from their assembly line identical multiples and make them one of the kind.”

This work will be show in tandem with Toyphabet, an illustrated alphabet where objects are transformed into letters and letters into toys.

The opening reception takes place in Brooklyn next week:
