As a filmmaker who is interested in design, Raafi Rivero (of The Color Machine) says he “zealously consumes writing on the topic, often with an eye to how it might be translated to my time-based medium.”

A year ago he interviewed “one of my creative heroes, Khoi Vinh (former Design Director at NYTimes.com and current founder of the iPad app Mixel).” He spent months cutting what a four-minute film on Vinh and a favorite topic of his: the grid, specifically grid-based layouts in graphic design. “Shot on three cameras, the conversation flits from inspiration, to plans for the future, comic books, and, somehow, emotion,” Rivero notes.
