My nomination for the best late nineteenth century conceptual lettering idea is the “Six Million” eyes above. Look carefully. Not only are the eyes letters, but they are ersatz script letters with eye-swashes connecting some of them. Of course, these eyes are not all-seeing, but they are trying to convince advertising buyers that the Gannet + Morse Company can deliver that many consumers on a daily basis. Are they lying eyes or do they see the truly big picture?
