Herb Lubalin walked the tight type rope. With photographic type technologies it was easy-peasy to kern to touch. Tight type was a style of the 60s-70s and Photo-Lettering Inc. was in the perfect position to offer this method. “Tyght Type” is a rare original specimen that serves as a kind of style-guide for the generation. Not everyone liked getting tight. But I used to say “Don’t be uptight! Down with letter spacing! Up with overlapping letters! Here’s my own version of the tight side of type.
