Is it still type? asks Jerome Corgier of Atelier graphique Pariri in Paris, whose Space typography is a three dimensional, paper cutout alphabet of hybrid letters, a mixing of Arab and Latin alphabets. “The forms can make us think of letters, but they are no more letters really. Their meaning and concept have vanished, they can be used freely as such,” he says.
“Arab calligraphic forms bring curves and sensual delight,” Corgier continues. “Latin typographic forms bring rigor in movement.” Through this project, which is only in its first stage, Corgier attempts to push typographic forms into “extreme steps to renew their figure, their beauty, their use. To work in volumes allow me to have a keen sensitive approach to letters. I model them.”
