Tomi Ungerer is back. At 80 he is back in town (New York), back in the museum (Eric Carle), back in the game. Well, actually he’s never really been away (see here) – his creative output has not been on hiatus. But his ribald and satiric editorial drawings, so common in the 60s through the 80s, have been sadly missing from U.S. venues and only last year, with the republication by Phaidon Press of some of his classic picture books for children, did his comeback begin.
On June 18, his solo exhibition at The Eric Carle Museum, “Tomi Ungerer: Chronicler of the Absurd,” will open (lasting until October 9). It will feature work from his multifaceted career (over 140 books), including drawings from will be examples from Ungerer’s first book, The Mellops Go Flying (1957), as well as The Three Robbers (1962), Flat Stanley (1964), and Moon Man (1967).
