Creativity and entrepreneurship always seem to walk hand in hand, whether a designer is launching her own business or a business-minded professional is incubating a creative new product.
“Highly successful entrepreneurs can creatively look beyond the present and imagine possible futures for their company. If you are a Creative Thinker, you are driven to steer your business in new directions,” writes Sangeeta Bharadwaj Badal, Ph.D. in a 2014 Gallup article.
Poketo, founded in 2003 by husband-and-wife team Angie Myung and Ted Vadakan, is a classic example of what can bloom from a marriage of creativity and entrepreneurship. The company was born with just one product and an art show and has grown into a lifestyle brand and purveyor of design-driven wares meant to instill art into everyday living.
In addition to collaborating with more than 200 international artists on exclusive products, Poketo has worked with notable companies and brands including Nike, MTV, SF MoMA, De Young Museum, Disney, Target and Nordstrom.

Over the last 12 years, Poketo has evolved from a modest upstart to an online destination with two retail locations in Los Angeles: The Poketo Flagship in the Arts District of Downtown LA and Poketo at The LINE Hotel. Both locations regularly host art exhibitions, workshops and more, acting as hubs for the local creative community.

Myung serves as the brand’s creative director while Vadakan fills the CEO shoes. At next week’s HOW Design Live conference, the duo will discuss the ins and outs of being part of a new generation of design entrepreneurs—from taking a leap of faith and launching their own products to developing a unique aesthetic and company with longevity—while inspiring attendees to do the same.
