Image of the Day
The great film critic Andrew Sarris died on Wednesday. In 1968, Sarris—who helped bring the French auteur theory Stateside—gave a lecture at the SVA Theatre on West 23rd Street, in New York City. The flyer advertising the talk was designed by Everett Aison, an instructor in SVA’s film department as well as an illustrator and book designer. (It was recently unearthed by the Container List, the blog of the indispensable Milton Glaser Design Study Center and Archives.) The Container List notes that Aison also designed the film titles for Roman Polanski’s Knife in the Water and Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo—”the latter, incidentally, Sarris slagged.”
