Concrete-lovers are in for a treat: The Second Columbia Conference on Building Materials and Technology will take place from October 1-3 at the university’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation. This year’s topic is Solid Sates: Changing Time for Concrete. The three-day event is part of an ongoing series navigating the boundaries of materials in the context of today’s galloping urbanization. This year’s installment will explore the development of concrete around the world in terms of emerging reinforcement technologies, materials science, emerging markets, production, installation, and, the buzz-topic of the Noughts: environmental impact. Conference speakers will include architects, engineers, and scholars such as Steven Holl, Neil Denari, Jesse Reiser and Nanako Umemoto, Werner Sobek, as well as the school’s former dean, Bernard Tschumi.
