July 8, 2008. The dramatically titled and dramatically beautiful “Between Earth and Heaven: The Architecture of John Lautner” will be on show at L.A.’s Hammer Museum from July 13 through October 12. Lautner worked with Frank Lloyd Wright, established his own practice in L.A. during the 1940’s and died in 1994. Curated by historian Nicholas Olsberg and architect Frank Escher to span a truly innovative but little-known 60-year career, the exhibition is, surprisingly, the first major survey of the architect’s formally diverse and structurally unusual work. On display are drawings and renderings that have never been shown, study models and photographs, new large-scale models, digital animations detailing Lautner’s construction processes and short color films of walk-throughs of sites and interiors by Murray Grigor. Published by Rizzoli, a gorgeous full-color catalog chock full of models, doodles, sketches and even paintings by the architect, accompanies the show, illustrating the way in which Lautner’s work, as Olsberg so nicely phrases it, was “poised between feeling and reason, stillness and motion, vista and shelter.” hammer.ucla.edu
