To reinvigorate national interest in native cedar, villagers from Umajimura, Japan, formed the company Ecoasu Umajimura and launched the Monacca line of cedar-laminated products. Named after the traditional Japanese sugar wafer, the knotty collection includes a slim-figured calculator (6.5 in. high x .8 in. diameter), briefcase (model shown here, 18×11.8×3.5 in.), and seat cushion (2.5 in. high x 15.75 in. diameter) that retail for $46, $230, and $35, respectively. www.arenot.com
