If you’ve never heard of Kouichi Okamoto, take note: As director of the three-year-old Japanese studio Kyouei, the designer’s portfolio of spare, clever-but-not-too-clever, Droog-meets-the-far-East housewares is expanding at lightning speed, with nearly all hits and no misses. His newest products are a Liquid Lamp (in metal) and handmade bookmark (in silicone) that appear to be melting. In red, the lamp looks like cartoon gore and the bookmark recalls FredriksonStallard’s Lovers rug, but in white, Okamoto’s signature color, both exude a more laid-back charm, one step shy of conceptualism—in a good way. www.kyouei-ltd.co.jp
