I’ve long wondered when American legal structures were going to begin catching up and defining the rest of what’s going on in the world—note that copyright standards are still woefully behind the times. Business structures have been changing as well, and remarkably so. In the past it has always been that American companies were either for profit or non-profit, with a strict divide between the two.

This article, at Stanford Social Innovation Review, says that’s because the Puritans who developed our initial blueprints found it sinful to co-mingle charity and for-profit work, which I haven’t verified, but certainly poses an interesting answer as to why.

The rest of the article details some intriguing business models that are gaining in popularity, and may approach legality soon.
