PopMatters has a fascinating look at the lack of job creation happening as our economy “recovers,” and what sort of economic structure this might point to if it continues. One model is Berlin, described as having less than forty percent employment, but also not being a center for poverty, because there simply is not a lot of scarcity.

I’ve been eyeing our economic and social structure with a lot of trepidation lately. There simply doesn’t seem to be a lot of support for the independent spirit, despite the so-called “American Dream” our cultural mythology holds dear. Instead, I see a weak social fabric created to simply give jobs to those without the motivation or skills to go it alone, and a complete lack of the social skills to force us to work together and support one another.
