Carry Hope: Deanne Cheuk for Smile Train
Updated: Aug 20
Deanne Cheuk is a New York-based artist, designer, and illustrator. She has been commissioned for her custom typography, illustrations, collages, and art direction by clients such as Urban Outfitters, Target, The Gap, American Express, and The New York Times Magazine. She recently co-curated an issue of Theme
magazine on the concept of “transitionists”—graphic designers who also exhibit work as artists.
Smile Train’s mission is to eradicate cleft lips and palates by providing free cleft surgery for children in developing countries and free cleft-related training for medical professionals.
“I had heard about the charity Smile Train a while ago and was immediately drawn to them. I am particularly impressed by the integrity of the organization and the way it is structured to channel maximum benefits to the single cause they support. It is hard to know where your money is going when you donate to a lot of charities, but Smile Train is very transparent about where their funds go. I had wanted to support them in some way, and when this project came up I immediately thought of them. My graphic features a smiley face, which is the obvious main concept of the charity it represents. When you look closer, though, you’ll see many other elements that relate back to childhood and memories. I hope this design will bring a smile to other people, too.”
See the complete set at My Design Shop. There are only 25 of each design, and they all come with a handmade hang tag and are individually numbered. All proceeds will go to the charity that the designer has chosen.
