Angus Hyland Collaborated With Pith To Create A Limited Edition Series Of Notebooks

Pith is a designer and manufacturer of responsibly-made products, including sketchbooks, notebooks, planners, and pads. In the first of the brand's Creative Commissions, ten limited edition notebooks were designed by Angus Hyland with hand-painted covers.

All sales proceeds will be donated to MAKE BANK who provides art material kits and online resources for young people interested in pursuing creative careers, fighting against creative poverty, and working towards a diverse industry with equal opportunities for everyone.

The first in Pith’s series of Creative Commissions, the ten limited edition notebooks feature original gouache designs painted by Angus in his London studio. These were created in parallel with his forthcoming exhibition ‘Looking for a certain ratio’ which debuts in Glasgow next month, with a view to going on show in London in the Autumn.

‘Looking for a certain ratio’ broadly describes Angus’s motivation, which is searching for beautiful compositions and harmonies within prescribed sacred geometry. Painted at his London studio, the paintings explore different colour palettes, from the striking combinations of tightly pigmented colour to subtle variations in pastels and monotones. Exploring different relationships between three individual reference points formed the basis of all of these intriguing compositions.

Established in early 2020 by Andrew Hardie and Liam Goward, Pith creates and manufactures a range of high-quality sketchbooks, notebooks, planners and notepads in the UK. Its collection is loved by designers, artists and anyone searching for the perfect lie-flat notebook.

Pith was founded with sustainability and environmental considerations at the forefront of their ethos and as a result, only use the finest sustainable and responsibly sourced raw materials in their products. Their first environmental campaign ‘We plant, you plant’, commits to planting a tree in Kitale, Kenya for every product purchased through their website, offsetting carbon emissions and raising awareness of the growing climate crisis.

For his Creative Commission, Angus has designed ten limited edition dot grid notebooks with original hand-painted covers, which will be on sale on the Pith website. All proceeds from the sale will be donated to MAKE BANK who provide art material kits and online resources for young people interested in pursuing creative careers, fighting against creative poverty and working towards a diverse industry with equal opportunities for everyone.

Pith's Liam Goward explains: “Our aim with the Creative Commission project is to create a space for our community to share and materialise ideas, seek inspiration and discover talent. Collaborating with creatives from multiple disciplines and experience levels on self-initiated briefs. Blurring the lines between Art, Design and Product.”

Angus Hyland adds: “Last December I received a Christmas present from a friend based in Berwick on Tweed. She had discovered a new brand of notebooks and sketchbooks, and knew that I loved reflex blue. It was so well-produced and I fell in love immediately. I got in touch just to tell them how much I liked the product, and that’s when the collaboration started.”

In addition to the notebooks, Pith has also produced a poster designed by Angus in an edition of 100, which will be sold online and at Angus' exhibition ‘Looking for a certain ratio’ at Cass Art in Glasgow.
