Annals of Montage
De Gemeenschap (The Community), a Dutch monthly avant garde magazine for Catholic Reconstruction, was founded in 1925 and ran until 1941, with exceptional covers by the likes of Paul Schuitma and Gerrit Rietveld, among others. It was the leading cultural magazine for Catholic young people. In October 1941 the magazine was banned by the Nazi occupying forces.
This 1931 cover by Piet Worm is a classic Modernist photomontage in the Constructivist tradition. The dislocated heads are an echo of a globe that refers to community. The top hat implies class and the hand represents the middle classes. From birth to wealth.
