Announcing Print’s Typography & Lettering Awards!

The detail, beauty and amazing nuances of well-executed typography and lettering often seem to get lost in the larger focus of design competitions these days.

So last year, we recruited Paul Shaw and Jessica Hische and launched an all-new competition: Print’s Typography & Lettering Awards.

And this year, it’s back.

But it’s not just a competition for typographers and handletterers. The awards focus on three categories (and each one has an accompanying student category, with a discounted entry fee):

1. Typographic Designs: Overall designs in which typography has been used as the primary focus or element of the piece.

Mikkeli’s 10th Illustration Triennial: Prakt Design Agency, Helsinki; www.prakt.fi: Matti Tuominen (art director/designer), Erweko Oy, Mainospuu Oy (printers); Mikkeli Art Museum, Grafia—Association of Visual Communication Designers in Finland (client)

2. Typeface Designs: Type that you or your firm have created.

Conglomerate: Type@Cooper (the cooper union), New York City; www.coopertype.org: Greg Shutters (designer), Jesse Ragan, Cara Di Edwardo, Sasha Tochilovsky, Andy Clymer (advising instructors)

3. Handlettered Works: Lettered designs created by hand.

Anonymous Chalkboard Graffiti: Columbus College of Art and Design, Columbus, OH; www.ccad.edu: Dangerdust (art directors/designers/illustrators/photographers), Matthew Mohr (advising instructor)

  1. One Best in Class winner for each category will be featured in Print magazine.

  2. Winners from each category, including the Best in Class, will be spotlighted in an exclusive gallery on Print’s website.

  3. Winners will be promoted in Print’s design newsletter, which reaches nearly 80,000 subscribers.

  4. All winners will receive a prize pack of design books from Print’s official online store, a subscription to Print magazine and a year-long membership to HOW U and HOW U Video.
