Is 2009 the Year of Fashion? The folks at the International Center of Photography certainly think so. They’ve programmed a slate of six photography exhibitions that will rotate throughout the year. Fashion photography, in particular, has been a “shockingly understudied subject,” says co-curator Carol Squiers, because museums are reluctant to feature work they don’t consider “art.” As a corrective, Squiers and guest curator Vince Aletti are looking at a broader cultural context, including editorial and promotional photography. Work from current stars such as Steven Meisel and Tim Walker will be displayed.
Closing May 8 Wall Stories: Children’s Wallpapers and Books, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, New York.
Closing May 10 Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones, Victoria and Albert Museum, London
