Cubist Anatomy of Charles Carlson

Anatomy is the oldest scientific discipline of medicine. The first documented scientific dissections on the human body are carried out as early as the third century B.C. in Alexandria. Go here for more information.

Most anatomists explore anatomy through dissections of animals, primarily pigs and monkeys. Claudius Galen is the most prominent physician in Ancient Greece whose conclusions are purely based on the study of animals and whose theories on human anatomy influenced the medical science until the Renaissance, i.e. for over 1,000 years.

We’ve come a long way from then to Charles Carlson with his simplified method (which was republished years later by Dover). Interesting how cubistic it is. And how primitive it appears. Yet when originally published in 1941 it was second to George Bridgeman’s anatomy books.
