Establishing Equity in Curriculum Design

PRINTCast: The PRINT Podcast Studio is a curated collection of cutting-edge podcasts we love about design, creativity, branding, books, and further subjects afield. Soon, we’ll have a dedicated digital listening room. In the meantime, we present Design Museum’s Design is Everywhere, hosted by Sam Aquillano and Liz Pawlak—a “podcast featuring stories of people and organizations using design to make an impact and change the world.”

The latest episode is a highlight from the archives: “Infusing Equity in K-12 Curriculum Design, in the Classroom and at Home.”

Here’s more from the Design is Everywhere team:

In this episode, we explore curriculum design through an important lens: equity. Successful curricula connects with kids of different backgrounds and learning styles, and contains content beyond a white-centric history and approach. Design Museum Everywhere’s very own director of learning and interpretation, Diana Navarrete-Rackauckas, dives into the subject with Dr. Aaliyah Samuel—who at the time of the recording was the executive vice president of government affairs and partnerships at NWEA, and is now deputy assistant secretary for state and local engagement at the U.S. Department of Education. The conversation also explores strategies for parents who were transformed into teachers almost overnight because of COVID-19, as kids continue to learn in the context of a global pandemic and during a global protest movement addressing police brutality against Black Americans. Ultimately, our guests provide insight on how we can meet this unique moment for both our kids and our communities.
