Everything is Designed (Redux)
Here is another in this occasional series of quotidian things – indeed all things – that are designed. Beauty is in the eye . . . The patina of age somehow transcends the ham-fisted commercialism. This wonderfully named Adjusta Cap, still used today by all the professions and jobs listed, suggests that the manufacturer understood that design – in some fashion – would make Adjusta Cap more appealing than other industrial adjustable-one-size-fits-all-head apparel.
In addition to defining status and position, these caps were designed to protect the consumer from various nasties. But the symbolic significance and functional resonance of hats (the politics of hats) is for another post.
