Hate, Fear, Patriotism
This election season is loaded with negativity. When Donald Trump told CNN’s Jake Tapper that he could not repudiate KKK Grand Wizard David Duke’s endorsement of his campaign, the specter of hate, fear and patriotism once again raised its serpentine head. But it is nothing new. Bigot groups existed long before Trump began spewing his bile. And the worst of them were not shy about propagating their venom through periodicals. These three, Liberation from 1939, The Patriot Review from 1990 and WAR (White Aryan Resistance) from 2003, each delivered hardcore hate to those who believed in the superiority of a few over the many. At least it’s not a new phenom, but it is back and we should guard, and fight, against it.
