Here’s the scoop on the expanded HOW Design Live program and 7 fresh faces you may have overlooked.
Paula Scher, who joined the program in December, is president of Alliance Graphic Internationale, a club of the world’s leading graphic artists and designers from 36 different countries. In this role, she has had the opportunity to travel and meet numerous designers outside the U.S. Her own work is world-renowned, and she made a mark as the first principal at Pentagram, which she joined in 1991.
Scher has been instrumental in helping woo European designers to add an international perspective to HOW Design Live, and thus will be leading a panel conversation titled Insights and Perspectives from the European Design Market on Monday, May 4. Her panelists include Anette Lenz, a German-born designer who creates fascinating posters for art and theater in her small Parisian studio; Tony Brook, the founder and creative director for London agency Spin; and Sascha Lobe, a design educator and the founding creative director of L2M3 in Frankfurt, Germany.
Scher will also give the keynote address at HOW Design Live on Wednesday, May 6.
Philippe Apeloig is a Paris-based designer whose independent studio creates work for Hermès, Phaidon and various cultural institutions. He has held the roles of graphic designer at the Musée d’Orsay and design consultant for the Louvre; studied and worked under April Greiman; taught at ENSAD, RISD and Cooper Union; and run his own studio in Paris—Studio Philippe Apeloig (FR).
Apeloig will deliver an international keynote Friday, May 8.
Adrian Shaughnessy is a London-based graphic designer and writer. He is a senior tutor in Visual Communication at the Royal College of Art and a founding partner in Unit Editions, a publishing company producing books on design and visual culture. He has authored monographs on Herb Lubalin, Ken Garland and FHK Henrion.
Shaughnessy will deliver an international keynote at HOW Design Live on Friday, May 8.
Brené Brown, Ph.D. is an engaging storyteller and a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. She also gave the closing talk at the 2012 TED conference where she spoke about about shame, courage and innovation.
