Today, kids in Brooklyn will have a new basketball court to play on—one featuring artwork directly inspired by them.
The Kevin Durant Foundation is focused on enriching the lives of at-risk youth from low-income backgrounds through a variety of projects. One of those is “Build It and They Will Ball,” in which the Foundation works with artists to help give refurbished basketball courts new life. After Durant signed with the Brooklyn Nets, the organization selected Timothy Goodman to work on a project at PS 315 and PS 115.
The Foundation partnered with The Trust for Public Land on the initiative. All told, “It's a large and important philanthropic project that breeds life and joy into communities and children and builds equity,” Goodman says.
Back in February, Goodman facilitated a series of workshops with kids from the schools, conducting drawing exercises that ultimately informed his work on the court.
While COVID-19 hit pause on the project, work has now been completed, and an opening ceremony is being held today.
“As a huge basketball and Kevin Durant fan, drawing all over a huge court for a community in my city was a dream project for me,” Goodman says.
