Life’s Lessons Auctioned

“Auction catalogs can tell you a lot about a person–their passions and vanities, peccadilloes and aesthetics; their flush years and lean,” says Leanne Shapton. In her latest concoction, Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion, and Jewelry, an invented auction catalog (pages below), the 325 lots up for bidding are what remain from the relationship between Ms. Doolan and Mr. Morris, who is billed as a familiar face on the New York design scene.

Through photographs of the couple’s personal jewelry, fine art, and rare furniture, as well as their pajamas, Post-it notes, and worn paperbacks, Shapton tells the story of a failed love affair–from first meeting to final separation. It makes you want to cry, and laugh, and cry some more.

So, what items from your ex would you put on the auction block for the world to see and savor?
