Lucian Bernhard’s Radio City
Radio City Music Hall opened to the public on December 27, 1932 with a lavish stage show. The new format was not successful at all. The program was too long. On January 11, 1933, the Music Hall converted to the rather familiar format of a feature film, with a spectacular stage show perfected at the Roxy Theatre in New York City.
The iconic Rockettes, originally the St. Louis, Missouri Rockets, performed as part of opening night at Radio City Music Hall and have been a fixture ever since. The Music Hall also produced a quarterly program with covers illustrated by leading illustrators. This January 1936 edition art directed by V. A. Hinzenberg, features cover art (the Rockettes as paper dolls) and lettering by Lucian Bernhard, by then one of the leading emigre designers in New York.
