Mike Perry Pulls It All Together

From the publisher:

From Andy Warhol to the sassy designers of today, screen-printing is a medium with undeniable panache. Prized for its accessibility and bold, saturated colors, screen-printing is cheap, versatile, and a little dirty. Not to mention fast. Author Mike Perry (Hand Job, Over and Over) screened his first shirt in college and wore it later that night. So listen up, burgeoning artistes: it can’t always be bad to wear your heart on your sleeve. Pulled stretches screen-printing in all directions, leaving no element untouched. This book is a survey and a how-to, a collection of prints and an idea bank. It brings together more than forty talented screen printers, including Aesthetic Apparatus, Deanne Cheuk, Steven Harrington, Maya Hayuk, Cody Hudson, Jeremyville, Andy Mueller, Rinzen, and Andy Smith, among many others. Pulled is for the creative person who wants to leave his mark on cotton, or anything else.

You get to do all sorts of fun books. How did this one come about? Similar to my other books I looked at what I was doing in my work. Screen printing has been very important to me and lots of my peers. So I reached out and got a brilliant response. Everyone in the book mailed me the prints which made for a month of getting mail extra exciting.

You also get to work with lots of talented and creative people. Who helped you out on this one? The amazing designer Emily Anderson help me design the book. And as for who’s work is featured, it’s a great list. Among others, Aesthetic Apparatus, Ashkahn Shahparnia, Scott Barry, Deanne Cheuk, Josh Cochran, Michael Coleman , Jim Datz, Demo Design, Rachel Domm, E*Rock, Anna Giertz, Gluekit, J. Namdev Hardisty, Steven Harrington, Maya Hayuk, Andrew Holder, Cody Hudson, Anthony Peters, Jeremyville, Therese Vandling,Landland, DNML, David Maron, Marque & Anna Wolf. Blake E. Marquis, Scott Massey, Garrett Morin, Andy Mueller, Chris Silas Neal, Pietari Posti, Islands Fold, Craig Redman, Chris Rubino, Nathaniel Russell, Seripop, Andy Smith, Marcroy Smith, Sonnenzimmer, Joel Speasmaker, Jim Stoten, James Victore, & Hannah Waldron

What can the reader expect to get out of Pulled? There is definitely a how-to component, but I think what people will really get is an idea of how they can help advance this exploding medium. And how exciting it can be.

How did you pick who’s work was included in the book? Just people who’s work I have loved over the years. And they had to be willing to send me prints.

You’re having a book release party this Friday with a panel discussion. What will you be discussing? Honestly, I’m not sure. I haven’t really planned anything.

What’s the general state of screen printing in the art/design community? Thriving.

What else do you want to tell your rapt audience? I am totally in love with all of the work in the book.
