Sis’ Subway Scribbling
Caldecott award-winning children’s book author/artist, Czech-born Peter Sis, has long done underground art for the New York City MTA. His latest drawing of Manhattan isle will appear in subway cars on all lines throughout the city.

Sis told me that “The idea [for the new piece above] was to remember John Lennon’s 75th birthday. … I found out doing this that Heinz Edelmann, who designed the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine animated film, was born in Czechoslovakia. I met him in London way back and did not know.”

Reminiscing about his love of NYC and his work for the MTA, he told me, “My favorite part of New York was coming to see you in old New York Times from 8th Avenue subway—all the hotels, bars, characters …”
