This month, the 19th amendment, the first piece of legislation designed to give women the right to vote—though minority women weren’t able to do so until the Voting Rights Act passed in 1965—turns 100. To mark the occasion, AIGA, alongside the League of Women Voters and the nonprofit VOTE, is presiding over a poster campaign to encourage voters to head to the polls and engage in dialogue around the history of voting rights.
The posters will live on AIGA’s Get Out the Vote site, where anyone can print and distribute them.
“This project was conceived in 2018—as a historic opportunity to unify and celebrate women of design while focusing their talents toward an important civic goal,” say the project’s initiators, Kelly Salchow MacArthur, Nancy Skolos and Frances Yllana. “While we could not have predicted what 2020 would bring, we do know that the democracy we are a part of can only work when we each speak up, and vote.”
