Print's Hand Drawn Illustration Competition Finalists, Set #11

Oil and Water Don’t Mix by David Hefflin (Denton, TX)

Materials used: Acrylic and water on paper Artist’s statement:

I’m a senior Communication Design student from the University of North Texas and I plan to make my way in to art direction once I graduate. I like to work fairly simply and try to make the strongest images I can out of simpler forms because I find that this tends to make a greater impact on the viewer. If things are too complex or overstated they can alienate or overwhelm instead of inspire or influence.

The Arrogance of Power by Joan Iverson Goswell (Valencia, PA)

Materials used: Handcut eraser stamps for both images and text Artist’s statement:

I am a book artist specializing in one-of-a-kind artists books. I’m also a political artist so many of my books have a political theme. This book was created concerning the abuses of the George W. Bush administration and this particular piece concerns Bush’s War in Iraq. A war based on lies and deceit  and the thousands of deaths that that war caused, conveyed in thus piece by the piles of bodies and the “splattering” of red ink simulating blood.

Computer Man & Others, or Not by Mary Sillman (Brooklyn, NY)

Materials used: Rapidograph drawings collaged and colored in Adobe Illustrator. Drawings done by hand stream-of-consciously reassembled on the computer. Artist’s statement:

The drawing is about the ambiguity of creating and life itself magnified and perhaps confused by the power of the computer. A feeling of a dream —with neuro-electric-elements.
