Benchley’s Witsdom

Robert Benchley was known in the late ’30s for his wit and wisdom; witsdom, you might call it. His movie shorts for MGM are classic bits of how-to brevity and erudition. This one, “How To Start The Day,” begins with Benchley’s quotable “In our last lecture …” he told his viewers how to sleep, which generated many complaints. “People know how to sleep,” he says. “They want to know what to do when they get up.” Voila!
