School Days, Rule Days
In 1896, former school superintendent Edward Smith designed “The Bulletin Class Register.” Often we don’t even think about the design of these kinds of functional, commonplace ledgers. But this one, published by The School Bulletin service, not only gives credit to the designer, but it’s on the cover.
There is something uncommonly beautiful about this simple booklet. It belonged to one Clara M. Porter, in attendance at State Normal College from 1896–97.
Typography is one of the most vital keys to successful design—and Print’s all-new Typography & Lettering Awards is here to celebrate it. But this isn’t just a competition for classic type designers: We’re looking for projects that feature great uses of type by any designer. We’re looking for handlettered work. And, of course, we’re also looking for original typefaces built from the ground up.
